TREASURER NEWS:

Applications Now Being Accepted for the
Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program

The Treasurer’s office is accepting applications for the Senior Citizen Real Estate  Tax Deferral Program.  Taxpayers must complete and return applications to the  Treasurer’s Office by March 1, 2012.

The Tax Deferral Program provides tax relief for qualified senior citizens by allowing them to defer all or part of their property taxes on their principal residence.  The State of Illinois loans the amount of taxes due to the taxpayer.  Taxes are not forgiven, just deferred.

Deferred taxes incur a six percent simple annual interest rate and a lien is filed on the property.  Deferred amounts must be repaid 90 days after the property is sold or within one year of the taxpayer’s death.

The taxpayer must be 65 years old by June 1, have a total annual household income of no more than $50,000, have owned and lived in the property for at least the last three years, have no delinquent property taxes or special assessments and have adequate insurance.

Taxpayers must apply for the deferral in-person at the Adams County Treasurer’s office.  We cannot accept applications sent by mail.

Contact the Treasurer’s office at 217-277-2245 during our office hours (8:30 to 4:30 weekdays) for more information or to make an appointment.
