"Feeding
Children The Right Message"

The
Parent/Caregiver
is responsible for the what, when & where of feeding.
|
|
Parents/caregivers
should:
-
offer balanced meals
and snacks
-
eat with the child
-
not allow grazing
-
not allow
panhandling
-
not be a short order
cook
-
not get into food
battles
-
not force or bribe
the child to eat
-
not comment on the
child's eating-good or bad

The
Child is responsible for how much &
whether to eat.
Children should:
-
be pleasant at the
table
-
tolerate the
presence of new foods
-
make do with less
favorite foods
-
decide whether or
not to eat
-
decide how much to
eat
-
grow the way nature
intended
With the right
message children learn to eat when they are
hungry, stop when they are
full,
and to accept a variety of foods.
At the
Table

-
Plan to sit down
together for regular meal & snack times
-
Turn the TV off
-
Let your child serve
themselves at whatever level they are able
-
If you "plate it"
assure them they do not have to eat it all and
there is more if they want more
At Meals
-
milk in a 3 - 4 oz.
glass (you drink milk too)
-
bread
-
one other starch
(rice, pasta, potatoes)
-
fruit & vegetable
(only one juice/day in a 4 oz cup)
-
protein food (meats,
eggs, cheese, beans, etc.)
At Snack
Time
-
have several set
snack times during the day (fruits, veggies,
yogurt, cheese, hard boiled egg, etc)
-
let them eat as much
as they are hungry for
-
sit down with them -
don't let them run around
Between
Meals and
Snack
Children will always do more and dare more with
eating
if you keep them in control of it.
