What is Citizen Corps?

Ø     Component of USA Freedom Corps

Ø     President Bush initiative-started after September 11, 2001

Ø     Creates volunteer opportunities

Ø     Helps families and communities prepare for and respond to disasters

Ø     Brings together local leaders, volunteers and first responders

 

Citizen Corps Mission

Ø     To have everyone participate in making their families, home, business and America safer

Ø     To harness the power of every individual through education, training and volunteer service to make their communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to all kinds of threats.

Ø     Prepare communities to respond to emergencies

Ø     Promote Citizen Corps programs

Ø     Focus on education, training and volunteer opportunities for community and family

Ø     Build on community strengths

Ø     Participate in community projects and events

 

The Adams County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) formally adopted and registered our Citizen Corps Council in June of 2003.  VOAD has been in existence since the 1993 Mississippi River Flood.

The county government sponsors our Council. The Adams County Citizen Corps Council is made up of:

Ø      First responders

Ø      City and county government

Ø       Volunteer community

Ø       Disaster Relief organizations

Ø       Business leaders

Ø       Media representatives
