Duties
Probation officers perform many duties, most of which fall under two
areas. The first is to conduct investigations and prepare written
reports for the Court. These reports provide the sentencing judge
with detailed information about the offender, the offense, and the
effects of the crime on the victim. This information allows the
Court to determine the most appropriate sentence for the offender.
Secondly, probation officers provide supervision by monitoring an
offender’s conduct and providing positive guidance. Offenders are
expected to fully comply with the rules of their probation as well
as to follow advice of the probation officer. The goals of the
supervision process are to protect the community and to help the
offender make positive changes in their life.
Enhanced services are provided to DUI offenders, drug offenders, sex
offenders, and domestic violence offenders. These cases receive
increased supervision and services and are subject to more frequent
breath and urinalysis testing to detect the use of any illegal or
unauthorized substances.
The Probation Division of the Administrative Office of the Illinois
Courts issues standards and guidelines that the Department must
follow. These standards and guidelines apply to both the
investigation and supervision functions of the Department.
