Application Process
The Merit Commission is responsible for testing and certification
for all sworn deputies and corrections officers. Applications for
the position of Sheriff’s Deputy or Corrections Officer are only
accepted after the Commission, by news release and/or classified
newspaper ad, states it is accepting applications.
Applications
from those wishing to apply for positions through the lateral
transfer process are accepted ONLY during the same posted time
period. Please include your letter requesting consideration for a
lateral transfer with your application.
Please
include a copy of your employee identification card from your
current agency where you are employed. A copy of your certificate
from the training institute that you attended must also be
included. Applicants requesting lateral transfer consideration will
receive a letter advising if they are exempt from all or part of the
testing process.
All applicants are notified in writing of the testing date, time,
and location and other pertinent information
The
general procedure is as follows:
For Deputy Sheriff
1. Physical agility test 2. Written test for those who pass the
physical test 3. Oral interview before the Merit Commission for
those who passed both the physical and written test 4. After this an
individual is either accepted or rejected by the Merit Commission
for the certification list to be given to the Sheriff as certified
for hiring.
For Corrections Officer
1. Written test 2. Oral
interview before the Merit Commission for those who passed the
written test 3. Accepted or rejected for the certified list to be
given to the Sheriff for hiring.
For either position, the
Sheriff and his staff perform a background investigation, oral
interview, and other reviews as they deem necessary.

the application form, complete it, and bring it or mail it to
