Application Process

The Merit Commission is responsible for testing and certification for all sworn deputies and corrections officers. Applications for the position of Sheriff’s Deputy or Corrections Officer are only accepted after the Commission, by news release and/or classified newspaper ad, states it is accepting applications.

Applications from those wishing to apply for positions through the lateral transfer process are accepted ONLY during the same posted time period. Please include your letter requesting consideration for a lateral transfer with your application.  Please include a copy of your employee identification card from your current agency where you are employed.  A copy of your certificate from the training institute that you attended must also be included.  Applicants requesting lateral transfer consideration will receive a letter advising if they are exempt from all or part of the testing process.

All applicants are notified in writing of the testing date, time, and location and other pertinent information

The general procedure is as follows:

                                                   For Deputy Sheriff

1. Physical agility test 2. Written test for those who pass the physical test 3. Oral interview before the Merit Commission for those who passed both the physical and written test 4. After this an individual is either accepted or rejected by the Merit Commission for the certification list to be given to the Sheriff as certified for hiring.

                                                 For Corrections Officer

1. Written test 2. Oral interview before the Merit Commission for those who passed the written test 3. Accepted or rejected for the certified list to be given to the Sheriff for hiring.
